The Swadeshi Science
Movement has been organising annually a National Seminar titled
‘ARYABHATEEYA’ in memory of the great mathematician Aryabhatta who lived in
the 5th Century. The subject of the seminar is different every year,
focusing on various aspects of science and technology that are of relevance
to India. This year, it is proposed to focus is on ‘Advanced Materials –
Science and Technology’.
About the Seminar
India has been
traditionally known for its excellence in materials development. This is
evident from the archaeological findings from Mohanjadaro, Harappa and a few
others. The skill in the development of new materials continued. A
classical example is the iron pillar at Delhi, possibly built in the 5th
Century which till date has not shown any signs of rusting. This remarkable
traditional inheritance has continued even today. The country has been able
to develop materials indigenously for use in critical areas as Atomic
Energy, Space and Defense. The proposed National Seminar ‘ARYABHATEEYA –
2008’ focuses on some of these areas of National Science and Technology
trying to link the traditional with the modern.
